Finally having an opportunity to make my first entry in our blog before heading off to dinner and the hockey game this evening.
From the moment Iain and I, Jamie and Karen stepped off the airplane we have experienced the electrifying buzz and the sea of red and white that is Vancouver during these Olympic games. The excitement is infectious and there is a party going on everywhere you go!
We are staying in a lovely old home, in a beautiful older area of Vancouver, south of City Hall and one subway stop away from Olympic Village. Our weather has been absolutely magnificent with the sun shining and the temperatures being above normal for this time of year. As we walk to our transit stop the magnificent mountains are right in front of us and the red and white tulips are blooming around City Hall.
Before heading to our first event yesterday, The four us wandered the downtown streets of Vancouver, passed the Olympic Village, BC Place to Robson Street, the heart of alot of the outdoor and indoor activities. Upon our arrival at the Vancouver Olympic Centre, the sight for all the curling, we were greeted by lots of outdoor entertainment which included some highschool aged Highland Dancers, doing the 'sword dance' using hockey sticks....of course!
The curling venue was unusually loud, with lots of chanting from all the countries' fans particularly Canada, the USA and Switzerland. We saw Kevin Martin and his rink dominate and beat Denmark 10-4 in 6 ends! How fortunate I am to have my own curling commentator with me...."that was a sweeping error. You can't be making those errors at this level of competition!" Yes, that would be my husband! :-) I have no idea how Iain keeps an eye on all four games at once!
We walked back to our B&B (we are doing alot of walking) before heading out to the restaurant 'Burgoo' for red wine and delicious comfort food both food and drink warming our insides!
The atmosphere inside Canada Hockey Place, for the Finland Germany hockey game was amazing and so loud with chanting, singing etc. I can't even imagine what it is like when Canada is playing! After the end of the second period, with Finland leading 3-0, jet lag caught up with us and we left for home and our beds.
Iain and I started today back at the curling venue cheering on the Scotsman of GB over China. The other game of particular interest was US vs Sweden. Some of those American fans are not in tune with curling edicate :-) so Canadian fans were definitely cheering for Sweden!
After enjoying our neighborhood, in the sunshine and holding the Olympic torch,at LuLulemon(one of their employees was a torch bearer) we rested up for dinner, with Jamie and Karen, at the wonderful Italian restaurant 'Il Giardini' (lots of good wine again)! We then headed to the Germany Belarus hockey game and what an exciting game it was! Once again the building was so loud with cheering and chanting for Gemany and Belarus - amazing!
Definitely ready for our bed when we got home!
